More Statistical Headaches...

It occurred to me the other day that some of the rather high "click through rates" for some of the feeds might be being skewed by search engine web crawlers.

I have written a small piece of code to disregard "clicks" from web crawlers - so when examining the statistical information in your feeds, from yesterday onwards, the "Clicks: " figure next to each item should be a truer reflection of clicks made by real individuals.

Live Statistics Now Working Properly

The script I had written to generate the live statistics was failing because the access log file was too large (the first victim of the relative popularity of some of the RSS feeds!).

I have now rewritten the script so live statistics are working again.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Just Published - Email Notifier

Receive a daily notification when new items are added to book lists on the Just-Published website.

Visit the book list you are interested in and then click the "Notify Me" link. Enter your email address and you will be added to the list.

An email will be sent out every night notifying you of new books added that day to the various lists you have subscribed to. If no new books are added that day, no email will be sent.

You can easily unsubscribe by following the link in the notification email.

Hope you find this useful. I may extend it to all RSS feeds. Thoughts?

View the Most Popular Titles

In addition to viewing the latest books on a particular subject, it is now possible to view the most popularly viewed and purchased books on the Just Published website.

When you choose a subject, you can toggle between New Books on This Subject or Popular Titles You May Have Missed.

Remember, books are added to the lists every week (or more frequently) and the list is only ever 30 titles long. The "Popular Titles" list reduces the chances of you missing the important books in your field of interest.

Live Statistics

It is now possible to check how frequently particular feeds are being accessed on the My-RSS home page.

I have added the excellent Libchart php libraries. This means if you select the feed you wish to keep an eye on from the Check Out the Latest Feeds drop down box, then click View, you can see the following charts in addition to the feed itself and the other bibliograhic information:
  • how many times the xml file has been requested
  • how many times the HTML version of the feed has been viewed
  • and, in the case of Just Published or Reading Lists book lists, how many times the list has been viewed from those websites.
I started logging some statistics in May 2006 so at the moment there isn't a great deal to see - but the charts will update every day and previous months will be archived for 12 months - so once the stats have built up you'll have access to up to 12 months activity on the My-RSS feeds.

I would welcome any feedback about other statistics or graphs that might come in handy.
